What's Twitter Anyway?

Twitter is a FREE information network made up of 140-character messages called Tweets. It's a new and easy way to discover the latest news (“what’s happening”) related to subjects you care about - like the Northwood Water Polo Club.

How is it Useful?

Twitter contains information you will find valuable. Messages from our club and the club teams you choose to follow will show up on your twitter homepage for you to read and they can be sent to your phone via a mobile SMS/Text message or with a specialized app on your smartphone. You can receive club news as it’s happening, learn more about changes and information that are important to you, and get the inside scoop in real time. This includes last minute practice cancellation, game locations, tournament changes, team lunches/dinners/ice cream, meet-ups and competition results.

How to Start Using Twitter

If you remember one thing after perusing this page, it should be this: reading Tweets and receiving information from your Twitter timeline is where you’ll find the most value on Twitter. Some people find it useful to contribute their own Tweets but it is entirely optional and the real magic of Twitter lies in getting real-time information that matters to you.  Below is a step-by-step on our recommended process for signing up and using twitter.
Step 1

Sign Up on Twitter

First, you will need to Create an Account with Twitter.  You can use THIS LINK to do so and then come back to this page for the next steps.  The process is pretty self explanatory, but if you'd like to see a step by step instructions from Twitter with pictures on how to create the account, click here.
Step 2

Add Your Mobile Phone to Your Account

The most powerful use of Twitter with Northwood Water Polo Club is in getting information immediately while on the go - and what better way than to receive it on your mobile phone.  The simplest way is to use SMS, which requires text messaging capability on your mobile phone.  Each "tweet" you receive will come as a text message on your phone (Twitter is free, however SMS charges may apply according to your service plan).
  1. To begin, text the word START to 40404 (we recommend adding Twitter to your phone book with 40404 as the mobile number)
  2. Wait for Twitter to reply and ask you to sign up if you're new or reply with your username if you already have an account, which you do.
  3. Send your username - the same one you used when you created and account in step 1 (do not send any additional characters in the message, or they won't be able to read it correctly)
  4. When Twitter asks for your password, carefully send your password to them (remember: passwords are case sensitive!)
  5. Twitter will ask you to send "OK" if you want to use Twitter on your phone. Send OK, and you're all set to begin following!
Sometimes there are little hiccups in this process.  If you do not receive any replies from Twitter, we recommend you try Twitter's instructions on How to Add Your Phone via Web Activation.

If you own a smartphone and would like to receive Twitter info via an app on your phone instead of a text - there are many various Twitter apps available for Blackberry, iPhone and Android based phones.  Just visit your phone's app store and search using the keyword "Twitter" to find one.

For more information or support visit Twitter's Mobile Help Center which has very good info on just about everything.
Step 3

Follow the Club Twitter Feeds

Once you have your mobile phone added to your account and working you are ready to follow the club tweets and be connected!

From your mobile phone, text the word FOLLOW and then the TWITTER FEED NAME of the club twitter feed (selected from the list below) to Twitter at 40404.  Since following the club's main information feed is very important, we'll use that as an example.

To follow the club's main feed text FOLLOW NWPCNews to 40404.  If you've done it correctly, you will receive back a confirmation from twitter as well as the last "tweet" or message sent out from the group.

Below is a list of all Northwood Water Polo Club twitter feeds and the command you would text in order to follow them.  Twitter can only handle one command at a time, so do each one separately.

Stopping Updates and Changing Groups

If you want to stop receiving updates from a particular feed because you are no longer associated with that team, use your mobile phone to text LEAVE Feed Name to 40404.  Example: if your child has outgrown the Splashball team and is now playing on the 10U Co-ed team.  You would send LEAVE NWPCSplash to 40404, then send FOLLOW NWPC10U to 40404 in order to get updates from the 10U group.
